2008 Ride of Silence
15.5.08
On Wednesday May 21st at 6:45 PM Coach Rick will be leading the Pasadena version of the Ride of Silence. If you don't know, the Ride of Silence is a yearly event dedicated to memorializing those who have been injured or killed while riding their bikes, to raise awareness that bikes are there, and to ask everyone to share the road.
The Ride of Silence starts promptly at 7:00 PM. As of today, there will be at least 230 Ride of Silence events going on worldwide all leaving at 7:00 PM local time. The Pasadena ride will be 3 laps around the Bowl at no more than 12 mph and will be silent. A brief memorial will be held at the PAA tent in Lot K immediately prior to the ride. Please wear a black or red ribbon or armband on your left arm. Please click through on the Ride of Silence links to find out more.

San Fernando Criterium
11.5.08
The race flyer is up and online registration is live for the 2008 San Fernando Criterium taking place on Saturday June 14th!
I would like to thank our sponsors for the race: The City of San Fernando, Montrose Bike Shop, Franco Bicycles, Positive Moves Coaching Services Rick Babington, Forte'-Morton & Associates CPA'S, and Specialized . Without them, the race most certainly would NOT be happening!
For those who have done the race you know it's a challenging but fun and fast course! The MAP will give you an idea of the course.
As I've said before, we NEED people to help work the race! We're VERY lucky in that the race is supported by the City but we still need people to help with registration (a few) and course marshaling (a LOT). Keeping this in mind, please e-mail me at mgunnell@yahoo.com with your preferred shift. Take a look at the flyer first and decide which race/s you will be doing and try to volunteer when you're NOT racing! Please give me AT LEAST TWO shifts you are able to work (in order of preference). I will try to give you your first pick wherever possible. I will also try to have the shift assignments done a week or so ahead of the race.
Following are the shifts available:
6-8 AM
8-10 AM
10 AM - 12 PM
12 - 2 PM
2-4 PM
4-Finish

Club Races in JUNE
8.4.08
Please block out the dates of Saturday June 14th and Sunday June 15th and plan on spending them working (or racing and working) at TWO races the Club is helping to put on!
Saturday June 14th is the 2008 San Fernando Criterium (MAP)
Sunday June 15th is the 2008 Bicycle John's Glendale Grand Prix
If you can't tell this is an ALL CRIT weekend smack dab in the heart of SoCal CRIT season!
More details will follow but without YOUR commitment to work, racing won't happen. PAA has traditionally put on fantastic races and we want that to continue in 2008! As one of the larger clubs in the area it is our RESPONSIBILITY!

Rose Bowl Ride Reminder
10.3.08
The traditional Rose Bowl Ride begins at 5:55 PM on Tuesday March 11th. If you somehow missed it, the ride has been in danger of being shut down by the City of Pasadena. Several cyclists (and other users) have been working hard to keep the ride alive. As part of that effort there is a "Rules and Guidelines" form posted that you should fill out and bring with you when you attend your first ride. Please follow this link to SoCalCycling.com, scroll down to the entry about the ride, print out the form, sign it, and bring it. As cyclists at the Bowl which is "home turf" for PAA, we need to be at the forefront of the effort and putting our best foot forward.

USA Cycling License Renewal
30.11.07
The time has come to purchase or renew your USA Cycling racing license if you plan on racing in 2008. All USA Cycling licenses are good for 1 year and go from January 1 through December 31.
If you are already a USA Cycling member OR you want to join your first step is to go to the USA Cycling website at www.usacycling. org
If you already have a license and need to renew just sign in and go to the renew screen. If you need to join then join. In BOTH cases you SHOULD come to a screen where it asks if you want a Road/Cyclocross license or a Mountain Bike/Cyclocross license. At this time it will also give you the opportunity to add on the other license (ie: Road primary with Mountain Bike add on OR Mountain Bike primary with Road add on).
This is where it becomes important to pay attention!
If you want to register your USA Cycling license to race with PAA you need to have a Road license as your primary. If you plan on racing some mountain bike you can then add a Mountain Bike license.
Once you have completed this step it will ask you what CLUB you belong to (or want listed) from a pull down menu. You want to choose:
Pasadena Athletic Assoc (PAA) - Glendale, CA
Once you complete all of this you will go to another step where it asks you what TEAM you belong to. You will be given the option (from a pull down menu) of:
"PAA" or "Vitamix/Sixtufit.com"
If you race for PAA Pro (you'll know who you are) you choose Vitamix/Sixtufit.com. FOR EVERYBODY ELSE (road, track, cross, mountain, cat 4, 45+, 60+, etc) CHOOSE "PAA".
This step is very important for getting proper point credit in the SoCal Cup.
If you mess up you CAN change it but the only way to do that is through a re-issue which costs about $15.
If you plan on doing more than 1-2 races a year it pays to buy an annual license. You will need an annual license to race any category higher than Cat 5 road men or Cat 4 road women. You will need an annual license to race any category higher than Cat 4 cyclocross. You will spend $10 for every 1 day license you purchase and the points will not track to YOUR name and they will not track to the CLUB name.
